Configuration & Template Automation

Structured data, rendered through Jinja2 templates, into reviewed and validated configuration — extending Reliable Automation's safe-deployment pipeline.

Hardcoded, copy-pasted configuration strings stop working past a handful of devices, and this module teaches the alternative: structured data rendered through a Jinja2 template into configuration you can review before it ever touches a device. You'll install Jinja2, render your first configuration snippet from a Python dict, use {% for %} and {% if %} to generate one config block per item in a list, and model something like multiple VLANs as structured template input. The closing project combines all of it -- structured inventory, a real template, and Reliable Automation's retry and dry-run pipeline -- into one safe, template-driven configuration tool.

    Jinja2 Fundamentals Through Network Examples

Installing Jinja2, and rendering a first real device configuration snippet from a Python dict using {{ }} expressions — this curriculum's first external Python package since Netmiko.

    Structured Data as Template Input

Modeling a device's multiple VLANs as a list of dicts — the same structured-data shape from earlier in this curriculum, now serving as a template's input instead of just program logic.

Loops and Conditions for Repeated Configuration

{% for %} and {% if %} inside a Jinja2 template — generating one configuration block per item in a list, conditionally, plus a real whitespace gotcha every Jinja2 beginner hits and how to fix it.

Rendering, Validating, and Reviewing Configuration Safely

Loading a template from its own .j2 file, and why rendered configuration must be validated before it's ever considered for deployment — rendering without an error is not the same as rendering correctly.

    A Template-Based Configuration Automation Project

The capstone lesson: structured inventory, a real Jinja2 template, per-device rendering, rendered-config validation, and Reliable Automation's exact retry/dry-run/post-check pipeline, assembled into one safe, template-driven VLAN configuration tool.
