Git / NetDevOps

Version control for network configuration and automation artifacts -- real Git and GitPython, a branch-diff-merge review workflow, and versioning rendered configs and source-of-truth snapshots over time.

Up to this point, every module has changed a device's configuration or a source of truth's data with no record of when, why, or by whom. This module closes that gap with real version control. You'll work through Git fundamentals -- init, add, commit, log, and diff -- directly against an actual switch configuration file, then use GitPython to drive Git from Python itself. From there you'll create a real branch, generate a genuine diff against trunk, and review a change before it merges, plus version two artifact types this curriculum already produces: rendered Jinja2 templates and exported NetBox inventory snapshots.

Why Version Control for Network Configuration? The Change-History Problem

Every module since Phase 2.6 has changed a device's config or a source of truth's data with no record of when, why, or by whom. This lesson names that gap directly, and previews the real, verified workflow this module builds toward.

Git Fundamentals Through a Network Config Example

init, add, commit, log, and diff -- verified for real against an actual switch config file, not a generic tutorial file, using the real, installed git binary in this authoring environment.

    GitPython: Driving Git from Python

GitPython 3.1.60, verified with its real signatures -- the same 'real client library over a raw tool' role pynetbox played over requests (Phase 3.1 to Phase 3.7), now for git itself.

Branches and Diffs: Reviewing a Change Before It Ships

A real branch, a real diff against trunk, and a real merge -- verified end to end. Includes a genuine discovery, found by actually running it: merging updates history but not the working-tree files, until you ask it to.

Versioning Real Automation Artifacts: Rendered Templates and NetBox Snapshots

Two artifact types this curriculum already knows how to produce -- a Jinja2-rendered config (Phase 2.9) and a NetBox-style exported inventory snapshot (Phase 3.7) -- committed and diffed over time. A static, clearly-labeled snapshot fixture, not a re-invocation of Phase 3.7's mock server.

Capstone: A Version-Controlled Configuration Change Workflow

Every piece of this module -- init/commit, GitPython's object model, branch-and-diff review, and merge -- combined into one real, runnable configuration-change workflow, closing with a real, readable commit history as the report.
